Role: UX Designer
Organisation: Edible Bristol
Team: UX, design & software development

Overview

Edible Bristol is a community-focused organisation working with food and volunteers. I joined the team as a UX Designer to contribute to a visual brand and website update, with the aim of improving the organisation's online presence and making its digital information more useful for current and potential volunteers.

Alongside the website work, I also helped explore and implement digital platforms to support volunteer communication and data sharing, working closely with a software developer throughout the process.

The Challenge

The project involved looking at how Edible Bristol could present itself more effectively online while also supporting the practical needs of its volunteer community. The volunteers were previously using a WhatsApp group to organise events and count attendance, which was ineffective and inconsistent.

A key part of the challenge was finding digital solutions that could work for both the organisation and its volunteers. This meant considering how information was communicated, how volunteers could interact with the organisation, and how different platforms could support communication and data sharing. Here are some early UI designs I built out:
My Approach

I worked as part of a small team, contributing to the visual direction and website update while considering the needs of current and potential volunteers.

Alongside the website work, I suggested and helped implement platforms for volunteer communication and data sharing. This involved considering the organisation's requirements and working closely with a software developer to understand how the proposed solutions could be implemented.

Designing Around User Needs

Throughout the project, I considered how the digital experience could better support the people interacting with Edible Bristol.

This included:

Considering the needs of current and potential volunteers
Improving the clarity and presentation of information
Contributing to a more consistent, cohesive visual identity
Exploring appropriate platforms for communication and data sharing
Thinking about how digital touchpoints could make it easier for people to engage with the organisation
Working with development

Outcome
The project contributed to an updated visual and digital presence for Edible Bristol and supported the organisation's communication with its volunteer community.
The work also helped increase the organisation's online visibility among current and potential volunteers.
Reflection
Working with Edible Bristol gave me valuable experience of UX in a small, fast-moving organisation, where design decisions need to respond to both user and organisational needs.
The project strengthened my ability to work collaboratively, identify practical digital solutions and communicate with developers — while reinforcing my interest in designing digital experiences that help organisations connect more effectively with their communities.
