The Problem
I wanted to create a design system that would feature my custom playfulness and hand-drawn style, whilst also remaining accessible to all. I looked at a number of different design systems, such as the below examples, to give me a sense of what might work for my own, and was drawn to these lilac colour schemes in particular:
I noticed that what united these design systems was, among other things: clarity, clean design and immaculate composition. My main challenge with this project was to marry together the playfulness of my own style with the clean, corporate finish of your typical design system.
I consulted with potential users to ask what they considered most important when navigating a website, and things they mentioned included:
- Readability
- Ease of navigation from one page to the next
- Visual clarity
I didn't want my design system's readability to suffer from being overly scruffy, or for it to look too amateurish! Check out some of my initial sketches when planning everything out:
